Melissa Febos Workshop Retreat a little slice of heaven..

All of us at Millay thank Melissa Febos for the amazing workshop she led at our humble campus...Personal Matters: Pushing the Boundaries of First-Person Nonfiction...May 28 to June 2...

One workshopper wrote: "This workshop was so much better than other experiences, but this was my first writer’s workshop.  I have attended numerous workshops and retreats in other areas like photography, painting, leadership, and museum studies, and this was by far one of the most satisfying. 
Melissa was awesome. So much better than I even expected."

Another happy participant wrote "The workshop was fabulous! I highly recommend Melissa Febos as an instructor and hope she'll come back to Millay again. I got a ton of writing done and went to some new, unexpected places with it, which is always great."

Let us all celebrate Claire Donato

The amazing Millay friend and alum Claire Donato's book, Burial, is now available from Tarpaulin Sky Press, just in time for summer vacation!

Set in the mind of a narrator who is grieving the loss of her father, who conflates her hotel room with the morgue, and who encounters characters that may or may not exist, Burial is a little novel about an immeasurable black hole. The book grapples with ontology and trades plot for ambience; the result is a lyrical elegy with no small amount of rot and vomit and ghosts.

Burial is available from Small Press Distribution or directly from Tarpaulin Sky Press. (It's also on Amazon.)

For those of you who teach, Mlle. Donato is available for classroom visits in the fall. She recently visited the University of Notre Dame and The New School.

Goodbye Writer's Block: A Master Class in Writing with Kara Lee Corthron

The weekend of May 11-12, The Millay Colony for the Arts welcomed the amazing Kara Lee Corthron as leader of a workshop on breaking through Writer's Block, held at the gorgeous loft offices of Trisha Brown Dance Company, in Tribeca.

Nine students gathered around the table, talked, shared work and, most importantly, wrote and wrote and wrote...it was a fabulous class, and we are delighted that everyone could be with us.

And what a great group. Many writers already very far along in their journey. A lot of insightful and illuminating conversation...

A lot of great projects-in-the-works that were galvanized within this class...

Some very charismatic and funny story-tellers...

Some very persuasive narratives...

And Kara, all the time, leading the group toward more writing, toward breakthroughs, toward getting their clearest and most powerful writing into the world...

Thanks to everyone for an amazing class!

Chatham Schools and Millay Colony!!

Hello hello!

As you know, The Millay Colony partners with The Germantown and The Chatham Schools to bring teaching artists into the classroom for amazing Master Class experiences in writing and the visual arts...

Here is one student's account of a Master Class with Carl Ferrero...

Earlier this month, acclaimed visual artist Carl Ferraro visited Chatham’s senior Fine Arts Workshop class to introduce himself and his widely recognized artwork. The New Jersey native currently lives in and works out of New York City, yet teaches art classes at the Boston School of the Museum of Fine Arts.
Ferraro has expressed that throughout college and his career, people have not always been interested in the style and message of his art; however, he has stayed true to himself and garnered great success through a plethora of mediums, ranging from watercolor to graphite to oil on linen. Ferraro demonstrates a skillful ability to expose an issue and give creative voice to his opinions. One frequent theme in his work is the usage of flags. He has been using flags for many years because he likes the pattern and feels they signify celebration. Additionally, Ferraro often uses words in his art to more clearly send messages, bolding phrases such as “You Own Nothing” and “Everything Must Go.”
Of all his work, he cannot point to a favorite; nonetheless, his most favorite aspect of his art is (hopefully) its tendency to incline viewers to take a double take. For instance, one work illustrates a splatter seemingly of ink. Yet, after re-evaluating the piece, it is clear that the splatter is actually drawn in graphite.
The motive and purpose behind Ferraro’s art is to create something that people will want to keep looking at. Undoubtedly, his unique creative expression is evidence that we will definitely continue to look at and be inspired by his work.

The last time we wrote, the snow was swirling and the winds were howling. Today is calm and lovely with Spring finally making an appearance. If you could hear the peepers outside, see the birds, and the greening lawns, you'd know how exciting it is to watch Spring come to Millay....
